Every club member must do one or two sessions as duty officer to ensure that the club can open all year. You do not need to be an experienced paddler in order to be on duty. The role of the duty officer is not difficult and is primarily to welcome and show around new prospective members and to ensure that the West Reservoir Centres site rules are complied with. If you feel unsure about what the role involves, please read the following or have a chat to a committee member or regular paddler. Key duties: Arrive on time - 6pm on Tuesdays, 10am on Sundays. No one will be able to get on the water until the duty officer is present. Collect the key for the Castle Canoe Club cupboard from the reception desk by the front door. Lay out signing in sheet and membership forms. Introduce new visitors to the club and facilities. The first visit is free, if people decide to join then they must pay the appropriate membership fee. Ensure all members and visitors sign the signing in sheet at the start and end of the session. Put any completed membership forms and payment in the box in the cupboard. Advise any committee members of any such money that you have received. If you leave the desk to show people round, lock the cupboard and leave the notice saying you will be back soon. Make sure the cupboard is locked at the end of the session and the key is returned to reception. What to tell and show new visitors to the club: Show them around the centre - the changing rooms and lockers (which take 20p coins), the equipment room (buoyancy aids/wet suits/cags/spraydecks), the paddle room and the boat shed. Advise them about rules regarding buoyancy aids, shoes and spray decks (see below). Ask them to sign the disclaimer sheet or hand in membership form and payment. If anyone asks for advice and you are not sure, point them towards someone who might be able to help. Most members are happy to help. If people have not been in a boat before - suggest the red Kiwi boats as they are the most stable and have large cockpits. Club Hours: Tuesday 6 - 8pm (summer only). The Duty Officer may paddle after 7pm, but please leave a notice saying that you are on the water, in case you are needed. Sundays 10 - 1pm. The Duty Officer may paddle after 12.00, but please leave a notice saying that you are on the water, in case you are needed. Rules you need to ensure people are aware of: Age: Anyone paddling must be aged over 18. Ability to swim: Anyone paddling must be able to swim 50 metres in light clothing. Non-swimmers are NOT allowed onto the water. Buoyancy Aids: Everyone must wear a buoyancy aid on or near the water. No one should go onto the jetty without a buoyancy aid. This is a Health and safety requirement. Footwear: All paddlers must wear appropriate footwear - there are sharp objects in and near the reservoir. This is a Health and Safety requirement. It is forbidden for anyone to paddle in bare feet. Spray decks: All paddlers who wish to wear a spray deck must know how to use one. They should either have BCU1star test, have done a capsize test at West Reservoir or be able to detail their experience. If you are not sure who can assist with a capsize test, ask other paddlers present, or ask paddlers to wait until another session. Do not be afraid to ask. Club equipment: Only members can borrow equipment from the club for use outside of normal club hours and away from the club. It should be recorded in the equipment book and signed by a committee member. Any wet kit should be taken home and returned dry within a week.
